Why Interior Design with Old is So Much Better than New

Why is new so much better than buying old furniture, decorative pieces ?  I love the stuff.  It just adds to much more to a house; it brings it to life and will last any modern stuff a lot longer, especially if you search out pieces which have the quality about them.  Don't get me wrong, I do buy new, but its definitely the old pieces that bring the house together and makes it a home.  I always searching out pieces; don't think that it's going to be more expensive, because unless you're going to some high end antiques or interior design shop, it's not; you'll probably pay a lot less.  I know brown furniture has been out of fashion for a while, so why not starting buying pieces while the prices are relatively low.

Once I find pieces I tend to keep them for ever and I love this Irish pine dresser, I picked it up about 15 years ago at Dagfields Antiques and Collectables Centre in Cheshire, England.  It cost me £150, which is was an absolute bargain.  It forms the central part of my kitchen and brings that little bit of nostalgia into the kitchen which has modern units.  I love the 1920's and during this period Sylvac, a pottery from Stoke on Trent were producing anything from novelty wares, like my facepots and rabbits to vases and the like.  I love the matt look and feel of many of the Sylvac pieces.

Where could you get a gorgeous piece of furniture like this.  This would look amazing in any kitchen and if I had room in mine, it would have been here by now!!!  You just couldn't buy the quality of this and it certainly wouldn't be cheap, it you were to buy a reproduction one.  The age and the history of this is amazing; I wonder what stories it could tell???

And just look at these Edwardian chairs, £125.00 for the pair, you couldn't even make them for that price now.  The elegance and sophistication of these Art Nouveau chairs is incredible and you don't have to use them around a dinner table, they could be put anywhere around the house.

The great thing about going to centre's like Dagfields is that you will have a lot of dealers on one site, so there will be competition on pricing and there's nothing to stop you haggling a little to reduce the price (if you're paying cash).  You'll find some incredible pieces and the variety too is amazing; you'll find stuff that nobody else would have and it makes your interior designing unique.

Here are just a few of my finds.  The mirror (£22), the church pew (£160), the chest (£145).  You won't just find great furniture etc at these type of centres, but also at car boot sales, but what you have to remember there is that you'll be competing with dealers, although I found this chest at Ford Car Boot Sale in West Sussex, yet another piece that I'll never part with and I only paid £110 for it too!!

So give brown a chance, it's not as boring as you think.
